As a practical matter, this marketing calls for a tactical retreat for newspapers’ front pages away from commodity news (the aforementioned council meetings and so forth, all of which could now be covered by someone else, maybe one of those newfangled citizen-journalists) and toward something more muscular and even—at risk of total apostasy—more pleasurable. By “pleasurable,” I mean stories that are just fun to read.
I like how the paywall went down at the Atlantic. They’ve got a lot of good articles. Anyways, the article is true of how I subscribe to the RSS feeds at LAT and NYT. I subscribe to the most emailed stories as my news digest. If it’s important and interesting enough to other people then it’ll deserve my time.
